| Glycoside Hydrolase Family 23 |
| Known Activities | lysozyme type G (EC 3.2.1.17); peptidoglycan lyase (EC 4.2.2.-) also known in the literature as peptidoglycan lytic transglycosylase |
| Mechanism | Unknown |
| Catalytic Nucleophile/Base | Not known |
| Catalytic Proton Donor | Glu |
| Clan | none |
| Note | Corresponds to family 1 of the peptidoglycan lytic transglycosylases described by N.T. Blackburn and A.J. Clarke (2001) J. Mol. Evol. 52, 78-84; 'Peptidoglycan lytic transglycosylases' should be renamed 'peptidoglycan lyases' because the cleavage of peptidoglycan is catalyzed without intervention of a water molecule. In consequence their EC number should be 4.2.2.- instead of 3.2.1.-; The stereochemistry of hydrolysis is irrelevant in lyases and should be confined to those enzymes with HYDROLYTIC activity. |
