Evol. 52, 78-84; 'Peptidoglycan lytic transglycosylases' should be renamed 'peptidoglycan lyases' because the cleavage of peptidoglycan is catalyzed without intervention of a water molecule. In consequence their EC number should be 4.2.2.- instead of 3.2.1.-; The stereochemistry of hydrolysis is irrelevant in lyases and should be confined to those enzymes with HYDROLYTIC activity. |
